Keeping your Gutters Clean

Water trapped in gutters can cause major damage to your roof and walls. Maintaining clean gutters helps keep your home in good shape. Follow a few simple rules of thumb to keep your gutters free of debris.

 

• Most gutter systems should be cleaned 3-4 times a year with each season.

 

• You can use a bucket but your best bet is to lay down plastic ( garbage bags or a tarp). This way you can throw the waste down and easily remove upon completion.

 

• Gain access to the roof with a ladder. Don't lean the ladder against a downspout or gutter, which can easily bend or break.

 

• Using gloves, pull debris out and throw onto plastic, dispose.

 

• Use your average garden hose to clean out downspouts by placing the running hose down inside the gutter.

 

The best way to relieve yourself of routinely cleaning the gutters is to purchase Gutter Guards or Gutter Screens.

Make the Most of a Replacement Siding Job

A re-siding project offers a rare opportunity to upgrade a home’s air-sealing and insulation. You can do an initial test to determine how much insulation your home has in the walls by using an IR or infrared camera inspection. If you have an especially drafty house this might be a beneficial test for you. After finding you need more insulation, ask your contractor to fill voids and gaps around window frames with spray foam then tape the frames to the sheathing with self-adhering flashing tape. Wrap walls with 1 inch thick sheets of polyisocyanurate foam which acts as an air and vapor barrier and drainage plane. All joints including gaps between the rigid foam and jamb extensions should be foamed and sealed with flashing tape. Finally workers should trim the corners of your home with one piece corner boards to reduce maintenance costs. Energy savings are important and you will be very happy to save money! You will also be very comfortable in your home and will enjoy reduced energy and maintenance costs for years to come.

Sump Pump Care

With spring officially here it’s time to check your sump pump to keep them in working order. Maintaining your sump pump is a much better way to make sure its working properly than finding out once the water levels rise.

·       Checking the pump. Every so often, take the cover off the tank. Slowly pour water into it. This will make the float rise and trigger the pump. If it's working properly, the water level will quickly go down and the pump will shut off.

• Cleaning the tank. It's kind of a groady job, but it needs to be done. To do so,you'll need to scoop out any debris that has collected in the tank. Hose off the tank.

• Cleaning the pump. Sump pumps draw water in through a filter trap. This trap also needs to be cleaned on a regular basis. To clean the trap, you'll need to pull the pump out of the tank. Disconnect it from its power source and the piping, then pull it out of the tank.

Winter Storm Damage...

A damaged home can feel like a heavy burden, there are some important strategies you can follow that will help you take care of your family and get the process started to repair your home.Begin evaluating the damage, if your roof has been damaged then try to get temporary measures such as tarps to cover your home and prevent any further damage by the elements. If you have had doors or windows damaged, then cover those openings with plywood to prevent intruders and keep out the elements. If the water pipes in your home are damaged then turn off the house water supply. If the power is off in your area, then turn off your main power breaker to prevent a surge to your home appliances when the power comes back on.

How to Clean a Window During Freezing Weather

Combine one cup water with two cups vehicle window cleaner. Pour mixture into a spray bottle. Spray outside of window, since the automotive cleaner won’t freeze you have time to clean the window. Use a soft cloth or newspaper to wipe away solution and don't forget the corners!

Winters Biggest Threats to Your Home

While you can't change the weather, you can minimize some of winter's biggest threats to your home. Heavy snow accumulation can pose a threat to your home-- both as it builds up and as it melts.

The three most important things to do are:

1.      Remove snow from basement stairwells, window wells and all walls. Melting snow can lead to water damage and moisture intrusion.

2.      Keep your attic well ventilated to maintain a temperature close to that of the outdoors to minimize the risk of ice dams forming. A warm attic melts snow on the roof, causing water to run down and refreeze at the roof's edge, where it's much cooler. If ice builds up and blocks water from draining, water is forced under the roof covering and into your attic or down the inside walls of your house.

3.      Watch for snow accumulation on the leeward (downwind) side of a higher-level roof, where blowing snow will collect. For safe removal that won't endanger you or damage your roof, consult a roofing contractor for a referral.
