If you have an existing deck make sure it's in good condition. Check for damaged boards and replace them with the appropriate decking material. Tighten fasteners or replace them if they are stripped, tap down protruding nails or replace them with deck screws. Check for splinters on handrails and steps, smooth with sandpaper. Apply a fresh coat of deck stain to brighten up the area, this will also keep your deck looking new by repelling water, resisting mildew and prevent fading.

Need a deck? It should cost around $15 per square foot (on average). Standard treated decking is economical and offers a limited warranty against rot and decay. Deck railings are for safety's sake however you can decorate them with balusters, posts, and spindles, post caps, and lighting.
